The Philippine Army continuously strives to enhance the capabilities of its personnel, not only in combat operations but also in the areas of instruction, leadership, and community engagement. In line with this goal, the 106th Infantry Battalion recently participated in a 5-day competency-based training in training methodology (CBT-TM). The training was designed to provide officers and enlisted personnel with the necessary tools to effectively facilitate and deliver structured training programs, in accordance with the standards set by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
This initiative reflects the Army’s commitment to holistic development, ensuring that soldiers are not only combat-ready but also equipped with the skills to teach, guide, and empower both their fellow troops and the communities they serve.
The CBT-TM program was conducted with the following primary objectives:
Develop instructional competence—to train participants in lesson planning, training delivery, and facilitation methods aligned with competency-based principles.
Enhance communication skills—to strengthen the ability of soldiers to convey instructions, ideas, and information effectively in both military and civilian contexts.
Promote learner-centered approaches—to shift from traditional lecture-style teaching to active, participatory, and outcome-focused methods.
Standardize training delivery—to align the Army’s internal training practices with TESDA’s competency-based training framework.
Build confidence among trainers—to prepare the participants to serve not just as soldiers, but also as effective trainers, mentors, and facilitators.
The training ran for five consecutive days, hosted in collaboration with the Provincial Training Center and facilitated by accredited TESDA trainers.
The participants were selected members of the 106th Infantry Battalion, representing various ranks and responsibilities within the unit. The diverse composition of the trainees added richness to the sessions, as different perspectives, experiences, and skills contributed to interactive learning.
Several moments stood out during the five-day course:
Active participation—Soldiers demonstrated eagerness to learn, showing that they value education and personal growth as much as military skills.
Practical application—The use of real-life examples, military-related scenarios, and field-based simulations ensured that the training content was relevant and applicable to the participants’ daily roles.
Collaboration and teamwork—Group activities encouraged cooperation, highlighting the importance of collective effort in both training and military operations.
Confidence building—Participants who initially felt hesitant about public speaking gradually gained confidence, showcasing significant improvement by the final demonstration.
The 5-day CBT-TM program produced several positive outcomes:
Enhanced Training Competence
Participants acquired practical skills in planning, delivering, and evaluating training sessions, making them more effective in conducting unit-level training.
Standardized Approach
The training aligned the Battalion’s instructional methods with TESDA’s competency-based framework, ensuring quality and consistency in delivery.
Improved Communication
The course strengthened participants’ ability to explain concepts clearly, engage learners, and adapt communication strategies to different audiences.
Increased Confidence
The practice teaching exercises significantly boosted the confidence of soldiers in handling groups, facilitating discussions, and presenting lessons.
Potential Multiplier Effect
Trained soldiers can now serve as resource persons, mentors, and trainers not only within their unit but also in the communities where the Army provides outreach and skills training.
The 5-Day CBT-TM Training for the 106th Infantry Battalion Team proved to be a significant milestone in bridging military expertise with structured training methodologies. By equipping soldiers with skills in competency-based instruction, the program not only enhanced their professional growth but also strengthened the Army’s capacity to deliver quality training internally and within the broader community.
This initiative underscores the Philippine Army’s vision of producing well-rounded personnel—combat-ready, service-oriented, and equipped with the tools to educate and empower others. The success of this training reaffirms that soldiers are not only defenders of peace but also mentors, trainers, and leaders of change.
